Fore-edge painting depicting "Lowther Castle, Westmoreland / Seat of the Earl of Lonsdale," artist unknown. Ex-libris Estelle Doheny. Quarto. 447, [1] pages. Chatelin binding; full green levant morocco elaborately decorated in gilt, spine decorated in gilt with five raised bands, solid double gilt roll to edges. Minor edgewear, joints just starting spine sunned, somewhat rubbed. Turn-ins decorated in gilt with binder's stamp in gilt to front turn-in, marbled endpapers, book label of Estelle Doheny and bookplate of Dorothy Jarne Pedrini Shea to front pastedown, 1-inch closed tear near gutter of front free endpaper, J. W. Robinson Co. (Los Angeles, Seventh and Grand) bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown recto. Internally generally clean, all edges gilt; newspaper clipping related to the 5th Earl of Lonsdale pasted to title page verso, some foxing chiefly contained to front matter, minor wear to gilt on edges. Housed in oxblood morocco pull-off case, spine decorated and lettered in gilt with 5 false bands, created for J. W. Robinson Co. by Sangorski and Sutcliffe; moderate edgewear, several abrasions, spine sunned. Very good with bright, well-preserved fore-edge painting.
