[Fore-Edge Painting]. [Walter Scott]. Border Antiquities of England and Scotland. London: Longman & Co., 1814-1817. Each volume with one fore-edge painting depicting passing coaches, artist unknown. Ex-libris Estelle Doheny. Two volumes. Quarto. Pagination continuous; cxxvii, 209, [3], ci, [13, index] pages. Profusely illustrated. Contemporary full straight grain red morocco, decorated in gilt and blind, spine decorated in gilt with four raised bands to spine, partial decorative gilt roll to edges. Rebacked, corners just bumped, minor edgewear, spine darkened, somewhat rubbed and soiled. Inner dentelles gilt, refreshed green endpapers, book label of Estelle Doheny to front pastedowns. Internally generally clean and tight, all edges gilt; offsetting, somewhat foxed, minor wear to gilt on edges. Very good with charming and bright, though lightly worn, fore-edge paintings.

The plates in this text often served as inspiration for other landscape fore-edge painters. For example, the engraving of Hawick, Roxburghshire (page 202) by J. Greig after L. Clennell serves as the inspiration for the fore-edge painting to Phaedri, Aug. Liberti, Fabularum Aesopiarum Libri V. (1718), lot 45780 in this sale.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
