With a fore-edge painting depicting Edinburgh as seen from the Calton Hills. Frontispiece portrait of the author. Bound in red leather with gilt rules and decorations on boards, five raised spine bands with gilt title and devices in compartments, all edges gilt, gilt board edges and inner dentelles, patterned endpapers. Binding rubbed, corner bumps, joints worn but solid. Pencil bookseller's annotations on verso of front endpaper, ink gift inscription on front fly-leaf dated 1849, minor dampstains in borders of frontispiece with foxing on adjacent margins, occasional smudges or light page creases. Very good.
