    Double Fore-edge Painted Pleasures

    [Fore-Edge Painting]. Samuel Rogers. The Pleasures of Memory, with Other Poems. London: Printed by Thomas Bensley for T. Cadell, 1801. A New Edition. Octavo. [8], 187 pages. Fourteen engraved vignettes and floral end-piece. Full red morocco with gilt rules and decorative borders on covers, extra gilt pattern and gilt lettered title label on spine, gilt board edges and dentelles, all edges gilt with gauffred marks at the end of each edge. With double fore-edge paintings depicting the landscape on either side of a building structure. In one painting people are standing or walking on the lawn, while in the other figures on the outside are seen fishing in a lake in front of the building. Boards rubbed, corners bumped, title label chipped and creased, joints rubbed; hinges cracked, endpapers discolored from leather turn-ins, front free endpaper coming loose, contemporary owner's holograph ink on title page: "May 20th Mary Hicks, 1801", light edge wear, few small pencil marks; otherwise in very good condition.
