[Fazakerley of Liverpool, binder]. Alfred Tennyson. Poems. London: Edward Moxon, 1857. Contemporary vertical triptych fore-edge painting to the closed edge depicting scenes from the text: The Lotos-Eaters on their ship (page 141), The Lady of Shalott spying Lancelot and tangling herself in the tapestry threads (page 67), and a high chalky ocean cliff (page 373), artist unknown. Octavo. 375 [1] pages. Profusely illustrated. Fazakerley binding; contemporary full chocolate levant morocco single ruled in gilt, spine decorated in gilt with five raised bands, single solid gilt roll to edges. Turn-ins elaborately decorated in gilt with binder's stamp in gilt to front, chocolate moiré silked endpapers. Internally generally clean and tight, all edges elaborately gauffered in a Celtic-style strapwork pattern; pencil notations to front blank recto, somewhat foxed chiefly to front and back of text block, small light stain to first fore-edge painting (Lotos-Eaters). Housed in custom black morocco pull off case, spine lettered in gilt, lined in chocolate velvet, moderate edgewear, somewhat rubbed and worn. Near fine with particularly bright, finely-detailed, and well-preserved fore-edge painting.

A phenomenal example of Fazakerley's skillful binding and fore-edge decorations. Though the near fine condition and skill of the work had led some to believe this and similar works are from the early 20th century, Jeff Weber (A.D.) notes that the condition is often a function of well-made protective cases and in fact could have been completed any time from publication to the turn of the century.
