[Edwards of Halifax]. William Falconer; J. S. Clarke. The Shipwreck, a Poem. London: William Miller, 1811. Likely contemporary fore-edge painting depicting "Coghill Hall [Yorkshire]," artist unknown. Small octavo. liii, [3], 215 pages. Illustrated with five engraved vignettes and three plates. Binding in the style of Edwards of Halifax; Etruscan style calf elaborately decorated in black and gilt, featuring palmette and Greek meander motifs, spine decorated in gilt with gilt-lettered black morocco spine label, single solid gilt roll to edges. Rebacked, foot of spine dated 1606 (reason unclear), corners bumped, moderate edgewear, rubbed. Inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers; early ink fore-edge painting label to front free endpaper verso, minor foxing, somewhat worn, front hinge just starting. Internally generally clean, all edges gilt; somewhat foxed. Very good with charming and bright, though lightly worn, fore-edge painting.

This depiction of Coghill Hall, after an engraving by William Angus, drawn by N. T. Dall, appears to have been a popular inspiration for fore-edge paintings attributed to the Edwards bindery (see Night Thoughts (London, 1802), lot 45046 in this sale; Weber, page 135, No. 1323). Though Thomas Edwards' catalogues of 1815 and 1821 do not specify the subjects of fore-edge paintings, it is likely this book is a match for either item no. 2224 (1815) or no. 1495 (1821).
