    Description

[Edwards of Halifax, presumed]. Thomas Wilson; Clement Cruttwell, editors. The Holy Bible. Containing the book of the Old and New Testaments and the Apocrypha.... Bath: Printed by R. Cruttwell, sold by Rivingtons; Dilly; et al., 1785. Each volume with one fore-edge painting; Volume I & III seemingly contemporary, Volume II painting with architectural points dating post-1844. Volume I depicting The Last Supper; Volume II fore-edge painting to the left, depicting Chatsworth House; Volume III depicting Tintern Abby, artists unknown. Three volumes. Thick quarto. Unpaginated. Edwards of Halifax binding; Etruscan style calf elaborately decorated in gilt, featuring palmette and pentaglyph motifs, spine decorated in gilt with five raised bands and gilt-lettered black morocco spine label, single solid gilt roll to edges. Corners bumped and rubbed, moderate edgewear, front joints weak, rear joint of Volume III weak other rear joints starting, spines worn with some losses and chipping to head and foot, Volume I with some staining to upper board. Inner dentelles gilt; marbled endpapers; bookplates of William Hodgson with ink gift notation to front pastedowns, book labels of Estelle Doheny to front free endpapers recto, pencil notations to front free endpaper verso of Volume I, hinges starting, endpapers somewhat worn. Internally generally clean, all edges gilt; somewhat foxed and soiled, text block unevenly toned, minor wear to gilt on edges, ink gift inscription to front blank recto with manuscript note in light pencil pasted below. Very good with charming and finely-detailed, though somewhat worn, fore-edge paintings.

William Hodgson, Hertfordshire (no date) - William and Elizabeth Hodgson (18 December 1819) - William Hodgson (no date) - Estelle Doheny (no date) - St. John's Seminary (no date) - Christie's (1988, lot 1312) - Jeff Weber (1988) - Randall J. Moskovitz (no date).

Christie's (Doheny IV, 1988) notes that the painting of Chatsworth House to Volume II would have to have been executed after 1844; the painting does not depict the Wyatville Long Gallery (completed in 1840) but does show Paxton's Emperor Fountain (completed in 1844).

Doheny IV, 1312; Weber, Fore-Edge Paintings, pages 71, 74. From the Estate of Randall J. Moskovitz, MD, Memphis, Tennessee
