Cadell; et al., 1786. "A new edition," deluxe issue. Contemporary fore-edge painting of Wotton, Surrey, the author's home, artist unknown. Two volumes in one; bound with Terra; A philosophical discourse of Earth. Thick quarto. Volume I - Frontispiece, title, [46], 311, [11]; Volume II - title page, 343, [11] pages; Terra - [2, title page], [6], 74, [4, index] pages. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece portrait of the author by F. Bartolozzi, forty hand-colored plates, one aquatint plate, one large fold-out hand-colored plate (1.5-inch open tear to lower edge), two fold-out tables. Edwards of Halifax binding; full contemporary straight grain green morocco decorated in gilt with Greek meander motif, spine decorated in gilt with five double raised bands. Inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers; bookseller's description pasted to front pastedown, Henry Sotheran & Co. bookseller's ticket to front pastedown, front hinge starting, endpapers somewhat worn. Corners bumped and rubbed, joints starting, spine and boards somewhat sunned and worn, several abrasions to lower board, somewhat amateur repairs and retooling to corners, joints, and spine. Internally generally clean, all edges gilt; hinge cracked at front blank, light pencil notations including fore-edge label to front blank recto and ownership of Francis Jekyll to the title page, title page and frontispiece foxed with minor dampstaining, text block with minor foxing, some offsetting. Very good with bright, finely-detailed, though somewhat worn, fore-edge painting.

    Particularly beautiful and brightly colored plates. Weber notes this copy is one of only two known copies of Silva identified as being hand-colored and with a contemporary fore-edge painting.
