    Description

[Double-Line Painter]. The Book of Common Prayer, and Administration of the Sacraments, and other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church. According to the use of the Church of England... Oxford: Printed by W. Jackson & A. Hamilton and sold by W. Dawson, 1790. Fore-edge painting depicting "The Expulsion from Eden / Genesis III 23.24," presumably by the "Double-Line Painter," with distinctive double pencil line-rule and brown ink label in neat hand, circa early 20th century. Quarto. Unpaginated. Full contemporary straight grain navy morocco decorated in gilt, spine elaborately decorated in gilt, decorative gilt roll to edges. Corners just bumped and rubbed, moderate edgewear, joints starting, spine worn, somewhat rubbed, one of four navy silk ties with gold fringe still attached to lower board but weak, two more ties laid in, all ties faded and fragile. Inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers; minor offsetting and soiling, pencil notations and fore-edge painting label to front free endpaper verso. Internally clean and tight, all edges gilt; three ink ownerships and forged Eugene Field ownership to front blank recto, somewhat foxed, some offsetting, minor wear to gilt on edges. Housed in blue cloth thumbhole slipcase lined in cream fleece, spine lettered in gilt; corners bumped and rubbed, moderate edgewear. Very good with bright, well-preserved fore-edge painting.

Ink notation to rear blank verso, "This book came from the library / of my father, Eugene Field. / Nov 9-19-1931 / Eugene Field II" and ink ownership to front blank recto, "Eugene Field / Chicago, Dec. 6th, 1893," [forged, actually the hand on Eugene Field II].

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
