Flavius Josephus. De antiquitate Judaica. De bello Judaico. Venice: Albertinus Vercellensis for [the heirs of] Octavianus Scotus, 1499, 23 October. Incunable edition of Josephus. Folio. Approximately 11.5 x 8 inches. a8, b6, A-Y8, Z6, 2A-2I8, 2K8 [lacking the original title-page, this copy has a three-line title-page in fine facsimile on old paper]. [28], ccliii, cclvii-cclix; 275 [of 276] leaves. Numerous woodcut initials, some small (five-line), and some large (twelve-line). Contemporary full limp vellum, "1499" in old ink on spine. S4-S7 with long clean tears, with old and newer repairs, some worm damage to inner margin of S5-S6, no text effect. Some old ink marginalia and few leaves with underscoring. Overall, a good copy of an early printed edition of Josephus.
Flavius Josephus (b. 37 or 38 A. D.), a Jewish priest and Pharisee, was put in command of the Jewish resistance in Galilee at the time of revolt against Rome, but was captured at Jotapata. His life was spared when he predicted that Vespasian would become emperor. His works are an indispensable source on first century Jewish life and history in two parts: "The Jewish Antiquities" explaining to the Romans the history of the Jews from Creation to the revolt of A. D. 66 and "The Jewish Wars" explaining the history of the wars from the Maccabean revolt to 66 A. D. to the Mesopotamian Jews.
