    More Information:

Edward Wilmot Blyden was born in the Dutch West Indies. In 1859, while still in his teens, he emigrated to Liberia and became deeply involved in the development of that country. Over the decades he held high political and diplomatic positions in Liberia, and was in fact a presidential candidate at one point. His writings were quite popular, making him one of the most renowned black authors of his time.
