Stapp participated in the unsuccessful attack on the Mexican village of Mier where he and many of fellow soldiers were taken prisoner and marched to the prison at Perote near Vera Cruz. He gives a vivid first-hand account of his treatment while imprisoned. He was released as a result of the overtures of his uncle, General Milton Stapp. Stapp's book about his time in Perote was likely the first book written about the ill-fated Mier expedition.
