First edition, limited to 525 numbered copies, this being number 60. Tall octavo, stiff printed wrappers. 53 pages. Hemingway's poem "Ultimately," rather oddly printed on rear cover. First book from the Casanova Press. Publisher's textured dark yellow and black stiff wrappers, with titles in red and black. Tipped-in frontispiece portrait of Faulkner. A fine copy, in shards of the original maroon slipcase. Early poems and short pieces by William Faulkner. [and:] Mayday. Notre Dame: University of Notre Dame Press, [1976]. First edition thus. Small octavo. 87 pages. Introduction by Carvel Collins. Faulkner's 1926 fable, with plates containing some manuscript pages of his hand-lettered and illustrated original, here reproduced in facsimile. Six illustrations, three of which are in color. Publisher's off-white cloth, stamped in black. Endpapers reproducing samples of the author's original hand-lettered manuscript. Fine in dust jacket. From the introduction: "William Faulkner wrote, hand-lettered, illustrated, and bound the little book which he titled Mayday. He dated it '27 January, 1926,' dedicated it to Helen Baird, and gave her the only known copy." This edition is its first appearance in print. [and:] [Peter B. Howard].
