Scarce Important Work on English Law

William Dugdale. Origines Juridiciales. or Historical Memorials of English Laws, Courts of Justice, Forms of Tryall, Punishment in Cases Criminal, Law Writers, Law Books, Grants and Settlements of Estates, Degree of Serjeant, Innes of Court and Chancery. Also a Chronologie of the Lord Chancellors and Keepers of the Great Seal, Lord Treasurers, Justices Itinerant, Justices of the Kings Bench and Common Pleas, Barons of the Exchequer, Masters of the Rolls, King Attorneys and Sollicitors, and Serjeants at Law. London: Printed by F. and T. Warren for the author, 1666.

First edition. Folio. [10], 332, [2, index], [1, blank], [4, engraved plates], 115 of chronological tables, [1, blank], [1, errata] pages. Illustrated with portraits Lord Clarendon, Edward Coke, John Clenche, Randolph Crew, Robert Heath and coats of arms.

Beautiful brown leather with gilt floral border, expertly rebacked with six raised bands and titles stamped in gilt on a leather spine label. All edges gilt. Title printed in red and black. Boards worn at the corners else with light shelf wear. Small ownership label on the front pastedown; small bookseller label on the rear pastedown. Internally quite remarkable with only modest toning and scattered light foxing. Generally a fine copy of this scarce first edition.

An old note in ink on the verso of the second front free endpaper reads: "First and Scarce Edition, most of the copies having been burnt in the Fire of London." Dugdale's landmark treatise provides a wealth of information about the sources of both English law and English legal institutions, including the Inns of Court for which it is a chief authority.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
