William Davis Robinson: Memoirs of the Mexican Revolution: Including a Narrative of the Expedition of General Xavier Mina; With Some Observations on the Practicability of Opening a Commerce between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, through the Mexican Isthmus in the Province of Oaxaca, and at the Lake of Nicaragua; and on the Future Importance of Such Commerce to the Civilized World, and More Especially to the United States. Philadelphia: Lydia R. Bailey. 1820. First edition. 8vo. 396 pp. Later three-quarter brown calf over marbled boards, with portions of the original spine laid down. Marbled page edges and end papers. Interesting association copy, evidenced by bookplate of former owner, T[homas] N. Waul, affixed to initial pastedown. Waul (1813-1903) was a commissioned Confederate officer who led Waul's Texas Legion in many battles, including the Red River Campaign of 1864. Marbled boards are severely worn; calf binding shows light to moderate wear. Textblock is heavily age toned throughout; water stains along upper edge of all leaves.

A native of Philadelphia, Robinson traveled throughout northern Latin America as a tobacco buyer, actively participated in the Mexican Wars of Independence on the side of the insurgents, and was captured and imprisoned several times. Contains Robinson's account of General Mina's expedition from Galveston Island to Soto la Marina, and their subsequent march into Mexico. As noted by Howes, Robinson was the "chief contemporary authority on the audacious filibustering expedition against Mexico under Mina, launched with a handful of men through Texas in 1817. Notable also for its advocacy of a communication between the Atlantic and Pacific through Nicaragua."
