William Bledsoe Philpott [editor]. The Sponsor Souvenir Album and History of the United Confederate Veterans' Reunion, 1895. Patriotic Poems, War Songs, Romantic Incidents, Biographical and Historical Sketches. Houston: Sponsor Souvenir Company, 1895. First edition. Large 8vo. Unpaginated. Hundreds of portraits, primarily of Texas women. Original gilt- and blind-stamped leatherette. All edges gilt. Patterned endpapers. Spine is mostly perished; leather is flaking, and boards are substantially rubbed along the edges. Hinges cracked; joints splitting. Contents, though, are quite appealing, with generally clean and bright pages. A scarce book that would benefit from professional restoration. Good overall.

A "souvenir" of the reunion of the United Confederate Veterans' Association, held in Houston in 1895. The book contains a recap of the meetings and events as well as hundreds of photographs. Advertising material for the book boasts of the album's contents: "Biographical sketches and engravings of distinguished Confederate generals, including engravings of every Division and State Commander of U.C.V. Engravings of over 500 Sponsors and Maids of Honor of U.C.V. camps. Superb engravings of a number of the most prominent Society Ladies of the South -- a magnificent galaxy of Southern beauty." A blurb from the Bryan Eagle reads: "The Eagle [...] unhesitatingly recommends it to those who love the present glories of the South or cherish the sweet sad memories of the past. [...] Those who wish an ideal souvenir of the Sunny Southland will find it in this album." The subjects of the vast number of portraits are predominantly Texas women.
