DescriptionWallace Stegner. Beyond the Hundredth Meridian, John Wesley Powell and the Second Opening of the West. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1954.
First edition. Octavo. 438 pages including Index. With an eight-panel, fold-out panoramic frontispiece of the Grand Canyon by William H. Holmes, and numerous photos, maps, artist's renderings, etc..
Brown cloth with gilt lettering; pictorial map endpapers. Slight shelfwear. Dust jacket is chipped and worn at edges, particularly at spine head. Powell's most dramatic achievement was his leadership of the 1869 and 1871-72 expeditions to descend the Green and Colorado Rivers through all their canyons, including the Grand Canyon. Stegner's review of Powell's expeditions is one of the best, this being a particularly impressive copy.
