Dust jacket has darkened along the edges and spine with the title letter on the spine faded almost to the point of being unreadable. Moderate chipping to corners and spine ends. A libel suit and then a complaint from the Hong Kong Government caused Heinemann to create five states of The Painted Veil in order to finally get it to the public. The attention created in the media by these actions only helped the sales of the book, pleasing Maugham greatly. In a letter to a friend, he writes, "I got something like 500 pounds of free advertisement and the book went with a bang."
