    First edition, first issue. Octavo. 293 pages.


    Publisher's green cloth with black stamping. Cloth shows rubbing with some light soiling. Spine is leaning and darkened. Mild foxing is present on the endpapers. Front free endpaper has previous owner's names and notations, including a pasted-on address label. Distinguished as the first issue by having four pages of ads with six Eden Phillpotts titles. Overall, a very good copy.


    Maugham based this novel on the life of painter Paul Gauguin. Like Gaugin, the book's main character is a stock broker who leaves his family and moves to Tahiti to pursue his dream of becoming an artist.
