DescriptionW. Somerset Maugham. The Magician. London: Heinemann, 1908. First edition, first issue. Publisher's blue cloth. Abrasion to pastedown caused by removal of a bookplate. Very good. In a custom slipcase.
Octavo. 310 pages.
Publisher's blue cloth with gold stamping. Spine mildly darkened; cloth lightly rubbed at corners and spine ends. Foxing to endpapers, page edges, and occasionally throughout. Abrasion to front pastedown caused by the removal of a bookplate. A very good copy, housed in a custom slipcase.
The main character in The Magician, Oliver Haddo, is a melodramatic caricature of self-styled Satanist, Aleister Crowley. Maugham and Crowley disliked one another and Crowley was offended by Maugham's portrayal in The Magician. Seeking revenge, Crowley wrote a scathing article in Vanity Fair entitled "How To Write A Novel! After W. S. Maugham," in which he accused Maugham of plagiarism and provided numerous examples to prove his case.
