DescriptionW. Somerset Maugham. The Land of the Blessed Virgin. London, 1905. First edition, third variant binding. Publisher's blue paper-covered boards with white flat cloth spine and gold stamping. Boards worn; spine and edges darkened. Overall, very good.
Maugham dedicated Blessed Virgin to Violet Hunt, with whom he had a brief affair and with whom he remained friends. In a letter to a friend, he notes that Violet was put out by this, "chiefly, I think, because it is called The Land of the Blessed Virgin and she could not imagine what the hell would be her business in such a country."
