Always aware of what the public was craving, this work saw Maugham moving into escapist fiction, popular with the British readers of the time. In the story he taps the themes of British imperialism and empire-building in Africa. Though popular with reviewers, The Explorer left a bad taste in Maugham's mouth. He later wrote, "I have a great dislike for it, and if it were possible would willingly suppress it."
