DescriptionW. Somerset Maugham. Orientations. London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1899.
First edition, second issue. Maugham's signature laid in. Octavo. 278 pages.
Publisher's green cloth with gold stamping on the spine. Cloth is generally rubbed and scuffed. Spine is leaning and shows some sunning. Minor foxing to endpapers with rear hinge beginning to split. All edges cut, distinguishing this as a second issue. This is a very good copy made even more appealing by the inclusion of the laid-in signature.
Orientations was Maugham's first collection of short stories. The book is dedicated to Mrs. Johnson, wife of the British vice-consul to Spain, E. F. Johnson. After the success of Liza, Maugham traveled to Seville to write. There he stayed as a guest of the Johnsons at their villa. While in Spain, he wrote four of the stories included in this book. Maugham makes mention of the remaining two stories, "A Bad Example" and "Daisy," as "the first stories I ever wrote, I was then 18." None of these stories was ever reprinted in later Maugham collections.
Stott A3a notes. Morgan, p. 70. Rothschild. From the Collection of Norman F. Moore.
