W. Somerset Maugham. Liza of Lambeth. London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1897. First edition, third issue. Publisher's pale green cloth is lightly rubbed and soiled. Very good.

    More Information:

First edition, third issue. This is the Colonial edition reissued in the home market with the words "Colonial edition" on the verso of the title page overprinted (i.e. blacked out) and the title page printed in black only; otherwise the edition is identical to the first issue. Octavo. 242 pages.

Publisher's pale green cloth stamped in gold on front and spine. Cover illustration of Liza in Coster costume by Maugham's friend, English artist Henry Bishop. Cloth is mildly soiled and lightly rubbed at spine ends and corners, with some fraying at bottom spine edge. A very good copy, without dust jacket.

As a result of the publicity it received in the press and the pulpit, the first issue of Liza of Lambeth sold out very quickly. To meet the demand while the second impression was printing, the publisher drew on the Colonial Edition, which was comprised of first edition sheets with a new half-title and title page. The half-title has "Unwin's Colonial Library" printed on the verso, followed by 23 titles, and the title page is printed only in black and enclosed in a single black frame. This, Maugham's first novel, is set in the slums of Lambeth, a London borough. Maugham drew on his time as a medical student at St. Thomas' Hospital in Lambeth, and his first-hand observations of the area's working class added great realism to this somewhat lurid (and exceptionally popular) story of adultery and its consequences.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
