    The Sword of Shannara
(1977) was "high-fantasy" author Terry Brooks' first novel, a work clearly inspired by J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Brooks' recent work includes the movie novelization of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (1999). This first edition was a reading copy sent by Ballantine Books Senior Editor Judy-Lynn del Rey to Nick Clemente of Hollywood-Pickwick on December 23, 1976. In her letter (which is included), del Rey writes, "The Sword of Shannara [is] the book we truly believe will capture the Tolkien audience." From the Robert and Diane Yaspan Collection.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
