Original green cloth with gold vignette of Robert Anderson, commander of Fort Sumter, on the front board and titles in gilt on the spine and front board. Illustration of major general's shoulder insignia on spine. Some scuffing to boards and shelf wear mainly at the head and foot of the spine and extremities. Very small tear at the head of the spine. Corners slightly bumped and abraded. Floral tan endpapers. Front hinge just starting to crack. Small spots on the top edge. Contents sound and square. A very good copy of a difficult to find book in its original binding.
Crawford was the surgeon on duty during the Confederate bombardment in 1861 and was in a unique position to chronicle the events leading up to and during the that set off the events leading up to the start of the Civil War.
