    Burton's Work on Zanzibar

Richard F. Burton. Zanzibar; City, Island, and Coast. London: Tinsley Brothers, 1872.

First edition. Two octavo volumes. xii [xiii-xiv, sectional title, blank], 503 [504, imprint]; vi [vii-viii, sectional title, blank], 519 [520, imprint] pages. Volume I with one folding map, four plates (including frontispiece), and four plans; Volume II with seven plates (including frontispiece).

Three-quarter brown morocco over marbled boards, double gilt rules on covers, spines elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt in six compartments with five raised bands. Top edges gilt. Stamp-signed by Root & Son on the verso of the front free endpaper. Marbled endpapers. Very minor rubbing to bindings; folding map with stains and some restoration; occasional light to moderate foxing, heavier in a few places. Altogether, an excellent copy in very good condition.

Though finally published in 1872, most of the information and narrative for this Burton work is from 1857 or earlier, when Burton's manuscript went missing (intentionally, according to Burton) and was discovered and returned to him in 1865, some eight years later.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
