First edition. Two octavo volumes. xxviii, 338; vii, 319 pages. Sixteen plates, of which six are colored lithographs. Illustrations in the text. Folding map. Appendices. Index.
Three-quarter brown morocco over marbled boards, double gilt rules on covers, spines elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt in six compartments with five raised bands. Top edges gilt. Stamp-signed by Root & Son on the verso of the front free endpapers. Marbled endpapers. Occasional foxing. Very good.
Burton, in his preface, points out that his The Gold Mines of Midian, published the previous year, was intended to familiarize the reader with the region: "it was an introduction intended to serve as a base for the more extensive work." Both works concern the 1878 mineralogical expedition to the region of the north-eastern shores of the Red Sea.
