The Journey that Made Burton Famous

Richard F. Burton. Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to El-Medinah & Meccah. London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1855-1856.

First edition. Three octavo volumes. xiv [xvi-xvi, errata, blank], 388; iv, 426; x [xi-xii, plate list, blank], 448 pages. Volume I with folding lithographic map, lithographic frontispiece, and two tinted lithographic plates with some hand-coloring; Volume II with folding lithographic plan of El-Medinah, tinted lithographic frontispiece with some hand-coloring, three tinted lithographic plates and one plan; Volume III with folding lithographic plan of Mosque, hand-colored tinted lithographic frontispiece and five additional tinted lithographic plates, one of these with some hand-coloring, and a plate of head-dresses.

Three-quarter brown morocco over marbled boards, double gilt rules on covers, spines elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt in six compartments with five raised bands. Top edges gilt. Stamp-signed by Root & Son on the verso of the front free endpaper. Marbled endpapers. Minor bumping and rubbing to the bindings; minor occasional foxing and soiling, mostly to the edges of some sheets and plates, a little heavier in places; some offsetting from laid-in newspaper clippings in a couple of places. Overall, a very good copy.

Burton's narrative of his 1853 journey, traveling disguised among Arab and other Muslims making the Hajj, or pilgrimage, to the holy cities of Meccah and Medina.

    Penzer, pp. 49-50.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
