Burton in ParaguayRichard F. Burton. Letters from the Battle-Fields of Paraguay. With a map and illustrations. London: Tinsley Brothers, 1870.
First edition. Octavo. xix, [1, blank], 491, [1, blank] pages. Wood-engraved frontispiece, added title with wood-engraved vignette, and folding lithograph map of Paraguay.
Three-quarter brown morocco over marbled boards, double gilt rules on covers, spine elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt in six compartments with five raised bands. Top edge gilt. Stamp-signed by Root & Son on the verso of the front free endpaper. Marbled endpapers. Spine slightly faded and with very minor spotting. A bit of rubbing to the board edges and to the top of the rear joint. Minor foxing to the edges and to a few leaves at the front and back, most notably the frontispiece and woodcut title. Closed tears to pages 351-352 and 411-412; also minor tears to the top edges of p. 475-476 and 479-480, the latter with slight loss. Despite these minor flaws, still a very good copy.
Penzer, pp. 84-85.
