Description

First Edition with Two Folding Maps and Isabel Burton's Added Preface

Richard F. Burton. Explorations of the Highlands of the Brazil; with a Full Account of the Gold and Diamond Mines. London: Tinsley Brothers, 1869.

First edition, first issue, as per Penzer, with the map in Volume II facing p. 1. Two octavo volumes. xii, 443; viii, 478 pages. Frontispieces. Two folding maps. Index.

Three-quarter brown morocco over marbled boards, double gilt rules on covers, spine elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt in six compartments with five raised bands. Top edge gilt. Stamp-signed by Root & Son on the verso of the front free endpaper. Marbled endpapers. Some slight foxing throughout. Very good.

While Burton was still abroad, his wife worked with the publisher to bring this book to press. Though she took exception with many of her husband's opinions, Isabel Burton refrained from making amendments to the manuscript. Instead, she added her own preface. Chiefly unsettling to her was her husband's permissive stance on "that unnatural and repulsive law, Polygamy, which the Author is careful not to practice himself, but from a high moral pedestal he preaches to the ignorant as a means of population in young countries."

    Penzer, 78.
