Three-quarter brown morocco over marbled boards, double gilt rules on covers, spine elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt in six compartments with five raised bands. Top edge gilt. Stamp-signed by Root & Son on the verso of the front free endpaper. Marbled endpapers. Small, shallow gouge to the upper fore edge of Volume II. Very good.
Volume I contains Burton's experiences at Abeokuta, a trading town upriver from Lagos. Volume II concerns Burton's explorations around Mount Cameroon, which he considered an unspoiled region perfect for a convict station or even a colony for escaped American slaves then living in Canadian exile.
