Description

With Four Plates and a Folding Map

Richard F. Burton. Abeokuta and the Camaroons Mountains. London: Tinsley Brothers, 1863.

First edition. Octavo. Two volumes. xvi, 333; v, 306 pages. Four plates. Folding map. Appendices.

Three-quarter brown morocco over marbled boards, double gilt rules on covers, spine elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt in six compartments with five raised bands. Top edge gilt. Stamp-signed by Root & Son on the verso of the front free endpaper. Marbled endpapers. Small, shallow gouge to the upper fore edge of Volume II. Very good.

Volume I contains Burton's experiences at Abeokuta, a trading town upriver from Lagos. Volume II concerns Burton's explorations around Mount Cameroon, which he considered an unspoiled region perfect for a convict station or even a colony for escaped American slaves then living in Canadian exile.

    Penzer, 70.
