Description

    R. G. Wilberforce. An Unrecorded Chapter of the Indian Mutiny. Being the Personal Reminiscences of Reginald G. Wilberforce, Late 52nd Light Infantry. Compiled from a Diary and Letters Written on the Spot. London: John Murray, 1894.
First edition. Twelvemo. 234 plates. Eight full-page plates. Index.

Red cloth with gilt titles on spine and front cover. Gilt Delhi medal decoration on front cover. The name of a previous owner is written on the half-title page. Minor toning in the paper and moderate wear on the binding. Overall very good.

Reginald G. Wilberforce was the eldest son of Samuel Wilberforce (1805-1873), Lord Bishop of Oxford, a member of the House of Lords, and a zealous advocate of liberalism. This volume was based on first-hand accounts documented during the Indian Rebellion, an armed uprising against the British East India Company, during 1857-58.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
