Description

With a Delightful Manuscript Diary of a Walking Tour Through New Hampshire in 1788

Osborne's New-Hampshire Register: With an Almanack, for the Year 1788. Portsmouth: Printed and Sold by George Jerry Osborne, [n.d.].

First edition. Twentyfourmo. 48 pages. With a small 42-page contemporary manuscript diary dated from August 22 to September 6, 1788 bound in after page [16].

Original plain paper wrappers. Housed in a red cloth solander box. Minor wear to leaves. Significant ink notations to covers and a few internal leaves, not affecting much text. Inked list of names and initials on a front blank, among them "Josh. Wentworth / Col. Langdon / Col. Long /" and "John Parker's boy(?)." A few tiny ink stains. Very good.

The manuscript diary begins: "August 22, 1788. Set of[f] from Portsmouth on a tour into the Western parts of the State of New Hampshire, in order to Visit & examin[e] into the Quality &tc. of lands found in the State..." and ends "...got home on the evening Sept 6, 1788." The narrative in-between tells of the writer's encounters with farmers and inhabitants of townships such as Litchfield, Peterborough, Washington, Bradford, Sutton, Salisbury, Chester, Dunbarton, and natural landmarks such as Smiths River. The manuscript offers a fascinating view of "history from below" and a wonderful contemporary account of life in the fledgling United States of America.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
