    Mark Twain: The Tragedy of Pudd'nhead Wilson and the Comedy Those Extraordinary Twins (Hartford, Connecticut: American Publishing Company, 1894), first edition, first state (the text block measures 1 1/8", the title page is bound-in, and the frontispiece shows a facsimile signature of Twain measuring 1 7/16" wide), 432 pages, reddish brown publisher's cloth with gilt and black titles and flourish, 8vo (6" x 9"), no dust jacket (as issued). Edges sprinkled brown. Original gray endpapers. Good condition. The front free endpaper has almost separated as the result of a loose front hinge, rear hinge tender, and noticeably bumped corners, edge and spine wear, with one small tear of the spine fold at the bottom of the front cover. Additionally, the rear cover has a small amountof black ink-staining at the bottom edge. A rare first state of a Twain classic.
