Publisher's blind-ruled plum cloth, gilt spine lettering on spine and nautical vignette on cover. Spine a bit faded. Overall a very clean and very good copy. "The first major textbook of modern oceanography" (GrolierHorblit). Matthew Maury, an American naval officer and hydrographer, laid the foundations of oceanography in this book. It includes a general discussion about coastlines, tides, currents, and other phases of the ocean and its life. In addition, Maury, assisted in measuring for the laying of the transatlantic cables, sketched the first section and the first map of floor of the Atlantic Ocean. (Sparrow) GrolierHorblit 71.
