"To California via the Horn in 1849, the 'Gold Lake' expedition and the diggings of the Nevada City-Grass Valley region. An engaging narrative based on the author's diary of three years' experience 'in the wilds of California' " (Wheat, Gold Rush). "According to Morgan, Schaeffer originally contributed these sketches to a religious newspaper under the pen name 'Quartz.' Schaeffer's book has received the praise of many for providing a congenial, yet uninflated account of his three years in California. He left New York in the ship Flavius on March 24, 1849, and sailed around Cape Horn to San Francisco. Shortly thereafter, the Argonaut visited Stockton, Sacramento, Rough and Ready, Grass Valley, Gold Run, and Downieville. He also participated in the Gold Lake expedition of 1850. Poor health caused him to take a cruise, and after recovering, he stayed in Grass Valley from December 29, 1850, until his departure on April 25, 1852" (Kurutz). Schaeffer's Sketches gives "vivid geographical descriptions and sketches of life in San Francisco and the mining communities."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
