John Yates Beall. Memoir of John Yates Beall: His Life; Trial; Correspondence; Diary; and Private Manuscript Found Among His Papers, Including His Own Account of the Raid on Lake Erie. Montreal: John Lovell, 1865.

Presumed first edition. Small octavo. vi, 297 pages. Mounted photographic portrait of Beall on frontispiece.

Half-bound in a modern binding of dark brown leather and marbled boards; gilt lettering and rules to spine. Raised bands. Slight pucker to paper on front board. Portrait frontispiece has caused offsetting to title page. A few dog-eared pages, but, on the whole, pages are remarkably clean, save for a few penciled annotations by a previous owner. Modern bookplate to front pastedown. Near fine.

After being badly wounded during the Battle of the First Manassas, Beall moved to Canada where he devised plans of guerrilla raids to liberate captured Confederate soldiers and later engaged in privateering enterprises along the Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay. Beall was finally captured, tried as a spy, and was hanged on Governor's Island in New York.
