Muir's Picturesque California in Parts

John Muir. Picturesque California and the Region West of the Rocky Mountains, from Alaska to Mexico... Containing over Six Hundred Beautiful Etchings, Photo-Gravures, Wood Engravings, Etc., by Eminent American Artists. San Francisco and New York: The J. Dewing Company, 1888.

First edition, India Proof Edition, impression no. 1140 of an unspecified number of copies. Ten elephant folio parts (19.125 x 14.125 inches; 485 x 358 mm.). 414 pages. With 120 plates, each with tissue guard, and intertextual illustrations. Title printed in red and black. Tissue guards with descriptions printed in red.
Ten parts uniformly bound in the publisher's morocco-grained white paper portfolios, each with pictorial paper side labels (parts 1-2 imprinted "J. Dewing Company" and parts 3-10 with "J. Dewing Publishing Company"). All parts enclosed in the original blue-gray cloth chemises with Julian Rix's "Picturesque California" motif printed in red and navy ink on front boards. Chemise spines lightly and uniformly sunned, with manuscript volume numbers written in pencil. Some light soiling to chemises, especially to volume X, and some shelf wear to extremities. A few chemise joints starting, but boards still holding tight; all of the light blue ribbon ties have perished, with just remnants remaining at mid edges. Some light discoloration to spine panels and outer edges of portfolios. Chipping to edges (mostly lower edges) of about half of the tissue guards. Overall a very good copy of this most desirable edition of Muir's work.

A lovely copy of the India Proof Edition of Picturesque California, which was issued by subscription in a variety of formats in the late 1880s. Most commonly encountered as a two-volume set in publisher's three-quarter morocco, the India Proof Edition of the book is one of three formats that comprises ten parts.

BAL 14744. Currey and Kruska 257. Kimes 172.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
