Folding Engraved PlatesJohn Chardin. The Travels of Sir John Chardin into Persia and the East Indies. The First Volume, Containing the Author's Voyage from Paris to Ispahan. To Which is Added the Coronation of this Present King of Persia, Solyman the Third. London: Moses Pitt, 1686.
First edition. Small folio. 417, 154 pages. Nineteen plates total (many folding) including frontispiece portrait and half-title. Index.
Period full calf. Raised bands; leather title labels to spine with gilt lettering. Blind-stamped designs to boards. Hinges and joints cracked, but binding cords holding firmly. Some restoration to backstrip. Some moderate foxing throughout. Armorial bookplates. Some scuffing to binding. Several folding plates reinforced with tape, but all intact and present. Overall, very good.
An account of Chardin's second voyage to Persia in 1673, first appearing in this English translation. In the preface Chardin mentions an additional three volumes to be published later, but which were never made available; in fact, it wasn't until 1711, a couple of years before Chardin's death, that the whole work was finally published in French.
