Original decorated brown cloth with Brer Rabbit vignette stamped in gilt on the front board and titles in gilt on the spine. Decorated endpapers. Moderate wear to boards, especially at corners and spine. Front free endpaper starting to detach; frontispiece and title pages detached but present. Pages toned with a few scattered stains. Binding slightly shaken with some cracking between signatures. Otherwise, a handsome copy in very good condition. A contemporary owner's name and "Christmas 1881" appear on the verso of the front free endpaper.
A classic American work. One of the earliest attempts to preserve African-American folktales, written in black southern dialect.
