DescriptionJ.M. Hutchings. Scenes of Wonder and Curiosity in California, Illustrated by Ninety-Two Well Finished Engravings. San Francisco: Hutchings & Rosenfield, Publishers, 1861.
First edition, first printing. Octavo. 236 pages with 93 wood engraved illustrations, including the unlisted one on page 33.
Original dark brown blind-embossed cloth covers with gilt lettering on spine. Considerable wear overall; spine ends, edges and corners are well worn, hinge is beginning to separate. Interior leaves are age toned, with occasional foxing and stains. Hutchings was a tireless promoter of Yosemite and created this California guidebook in part to sing its praises, the first such work to describe the state's natural and manmade attractions in detail. Very good.
