More Information: James Granger. London: Printed for T. Davies, 1769. First edition. Four quarto volumes. With engraved frontispiece portrait of Granger in volume I. [With:] James Granger. A supplement, consisting of corrections and large additions, to A biographical history of England, Referred to their proper Places in that Work: to which, Besides an Index to the Additional Characters, are subjoined Exact Emendations and Improvements of the Index to the Former Volumes; and a list of curious portraits of eminent persons not yet engraved, communicated, by the Honourable Horace Walpole, to the author, James Granger, Vicar of Shiplake, in Oxfordshire. London: Printed for T. Davies [and five others], 1774.First edition. Quarto. Uniformly bound in contemporary full tree calf, smooth spines elaborately gilt in compartments, gilt red and green morocco lettering pieces, gilt board edges. Engraved armorial bookplates affixed to front pastedowns. A few instances of notations and corrections by a contemporary or near-contemporary owner. A few instances of subtle foxing. Some light wear to board extremities, with slight loss to corners. Joints starting but boards still holding tight. Overall a very good copy. A handsome copy of the first edition in lovely contemporary tree calf, complete with the supplement from 1774, and published well before any of the "grangerizing" that would characterize later editions. Granger "published his Biographical History of England from Egbert the Great to the Revolution in 1769. By 1824 various editors had increased it to six volumes by adding illustrations and biographies taken from other books. Because many books were robbed of steel engravings to put into Granger's history, such mutilation came to be known as grangerizing" (Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition).
