Description

    J. Evetts Haley. The XIT Ranch of Texas and the Early Days of the Llano Estacado. Chicago: The Lakeside Press, 1929. First edition. 8vo. xvi, 261pp. With one folding map of the XIT ranch and a map of the "Western Land Cessions" used as a frontispiece. Illustrated. Original green cloth with a Texas longhorn vignette stamped in gilt on the front board and titles stamped in gilt on the spine. Top edge gilt. Spine ever-so-slightly toned, else minimal shelf wear. Contents sound with a former owner's small book plate on the front pastedown. A near fine copy.

This is the venerable author's first book and remains one of finest books written on the cattle industry. The original printing was reputed to be 1,380 copies. Due to some of Haley's outspoken assertions in the book, the majority of the first edition was impounded by the court which has caused the book to be quite scarce and expensive when found.
