H.P. Lovecraft Beyond the Wall of Sleep. (Sauk City, Wisconsin: Arkham House, 1943), first edition, 458 pages, black cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine, 8vo (6.5" x 9.25"), dust jacket (in protective Mylar). The creator of the Cthulhu Mythos did not live to see his stories published in book form. Intestinal cancer claimed him at the young age of 46, so the only place he ever saw his work published was in Weird Tales and other pulp magazines of the day. Had he lived to see the creation of Arkham House, Lovecraft would have swelled with pride at the treatment his fiction found there. Arkham House was formed two years after Lovecraft's death by August Derleth and Donald Wandrei, two of the world's biggest Lovecraft fans. Arkham House's devotion to Lovecraft is largely responsible for his continued popularity, and their releases are the holy grail for Lovecraft collectors. This copy is good, with slight edge wear, a previous owner's signature on the front free endpaper, handwritten marginalia by a previous owner on the half-title page and mild foxing throughout. The dust jacket has noticeable edge wear and some chipping at both the head and tail of the spine, with the "Beyond" of the title torn from the spine head. Arkham House Lovecraft releases are scarce in any condition because of low print runs. Beyond the Wall of Sleep was limited to 1200 copies in this first edition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
