Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Tales of a Wayside Inn. Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1863. First edition, first printing. Green cloth beveled boards stamped in blind with the spine stamped in gilt. Brown endpapers. Top edge gilt. Very good.

    More Information:

Very minor rubbing, lightly bumped corners and spine ends which are fraying, gilt on the spine is rubbing off and the spine and edges are slightly darkened. Previous owner's bookplate affixed to the front free endpaper. A very good copy of Longfellow's poetry.

First edition, first printing points: Publisher's 22 page catalog dated November 1863 and vignette title-page inserted. Presence on page 125 verse three of "Whistled, saying",  and on page 174 verse four up of "His only pastime". In second and later printings these appear on page 125 verse three as "Whistling, said" and on page 174 verse four up as "His sole diversion." This copy does not have the earliest state of the advertisements, as page 11 of the advertisements does not describe the present title as "nearly ready", but rather states the price of $1.25. We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
