More Information: Henry Moses. A Collection of Antique Vases, Altars, Paterae, Tripods, Candelabra Sarcophagi, etc. London: J. Taylor, [1814]. First edition. Quarto. [2], xii, 61, [1, imprint], 8 [advertisements] pp. Complete with an engraved frontispiece, eighteen inter-textual engravings, and 151 leaves of engraved plates, ten of which have been colored by hand. Nineteenth-century three-quarter brown morocco over Nonpareil marbled boards, spine in compartments with gilt lettering, orange endpapers, edges uncut. Boards slightly scuffed. Light foxing throughout, as is usually the case. Overall a very good copy. A Collection of Vases is the work for which English engraver Henry Moses (1782-1870) is most well-known, in part because the work is said to have inspired John Keats in 1820 to write "Ode on a Grecian Urn". Although most of the engraved plates are of vases and other antiquities in public and private collections, there are nineteen finely engraved plates in the section on tombs including the Mausoleum of Hadrian and the tombs of Caius Cestius, Cecilia Metella, Alexander Severus and Julia Mammea. Moses writes in his Preface that these "may not at first appear connected with the principal object of the work: yet as they represent some of the vast and superb sepulchral chambers in which Vases, Cinerary Urns, and Sarcophagi were deposited, and are taken from Bartoli and other celebrated authorities, it is hoped that they will be considered as an useful addition.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
