Harley True Burton. A History of the J A Ranch. A Thesis, Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Texas in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts, June, 1927. Austin: Press of Von Boeckmann-Jones Company, 1928. First edition. 8vo. 147 pages. Four photographic plates including a portrait of Charles Goodnight used as the frontispiece. Original red cloth over boards with titles stamped in gilt on the front board and spine. Moderate insect damage to the boards with a couple of small nicks to the cloth on the front board. Contents sound and tight. Generally a very good copy.

The J A ranch was the oldest ranch in the Texas Panhandle, founded by Charles Goodnight and John Adair. Burton does an admirable job of chronicling the ranch's history through the early part of the 20th Century. Though Burton's book has been reprinted, first editions rarely find their way to market.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
