DescriptionGeminiano Montanari. L' Astrologio Convinta Dif Also Col Mezzo di Nuove Esperienze, e Ragioni Fisico-Astronomiche, o Sia La Caccia del Frugnolo. Venice: F. Nicolini, 1685.
First edition. Quarto. xiv, 132, 131-258 pages. With an engraved portrait.
Contemporary vellum over pasteboard, with contemporary manuscript title on spine. Signature Q misbound (but all leaves present). Small marginal paper flaw on C3, affecting a few letters. Overall a very good copy.
A handsome copy of Montanari's battles against astrology, which aroused great interest and brought about the banning of the subject from universities. In this work "instead of merely fulminating against astrology or repeating old arguments, [Montanari] attempted to show its falsity by experiments as well. His book is furthermore written in a sober, dispassionate and impartial manner which accords well with experimental science" (Thorndike VIII, p.342). Montanari was a professor of mathematics at the University of Bologna and was a principle mover in the flowering science in that city at the beginning of the 18th century. Ricardi II:175.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.View More Testimonials
