More Information: Edmund Clarence Stedman. Poets of America. Cambridge: Printed at the Riverside Press, 1885. First edition of a limited edition of 150 large-paper copies. Two octavo volumes with twelve engraved portraits (including frontispieces) on India paper mounted. Contemporary half brown morocco over brown cloth by Whitman Bennett, spine compartments with gilt panels containing gilt stars, gilt spine lettering, gilt ruled bands, brown endpapers, top edges gilt. A very pleasing copy; extremely clean inside and out. In the first two chapters of this attractive set, Stedman discusses the background and influences upon American poets. While he concentrates heavily upon the great poets (Poe, Whitman, Longfellow, Whittier, etc.), he does mention in some form 240 literary names of which 64 are women. Stedman was a journalist and founder of the Author's Club.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
